Mackinac Island, MI

St. Ignance, Michigan

Admin: Terri Keene

Mackinac Island has been allowing people to bring their own horses over for the past couple of years. There is the Mackinac Equestrian Center to board your horses at, and you will have to make hotel reservations on the island. I suggest Sunset Condo's or Stone Cliff Inn. Stone Cliff does offer breakfast which is nice. You also need to make reservations for you and your horse with Star Line Ferry. I suggest taking a cooler of food and drink to be portered over to your hotel. The condos are closer to the barn but farther from town. Being as a taxi ride can take a over an hour to get to town it might take you a long time to go eat then go to the barn. Taxi's don't go to the barn you have to walk or take a bike. Plan your trip for off peak season as you are unloaded off the boat in the middle of town. We went at the end of Sept which was great tourist wise, but not so great weather wise with the boat. We missed a day because the water was to rough to take the horses. If that happens there is a place to ride just outside of St. Ignance called Castle Rock. It can be hard to coordinate your hotel/barn/ferry so I suggest starting as early as you can. I started in Feb and we went in Sept. You really need to read through all the websites for all the information. The barn requires certain vaccinations for your horse. Everything on the Island is very expensive but it's a bucket list trip for sure! Even though the island is only 8 miles around, there are tons of horse trails that criss cross the island.
