Hayes Canyon Campground (Shawnee Nat'l Forest)

Eddyville, Illinois

Admin: Monica Joy

Located in the Shawnee National Forest. Ride east out of camp to such places as Indian Kitchen, Secret Canyon, Owl Bluff, Salt Peter Cave, and we even made it all the way to the One Horse Gap! Ride west out of camp to Jackson Hole, Petticoat Junction, Peter Cave, Crow Knob, Blue Hole, and Sand Cave. Word to the wise: do NOT ride into Blue Hole, only cross at the actual trail crossing-no matter how many hoof prints you see leading into Blue Hole! It was dry when we were there and the only water in the creek was in the hole so we let the horses go drink. We found out it is actually a drop off when a horse and rider from our group disappeared under water! (Both were shaken, but came out with only a couple scratches.) The campground hosts are friendly and wonderful people. There are permanent campers who are also very friendly and willing to help. For more info visit www.hayescanyon.com. Also, many of these photos of rock formations should have waterfalls, but we went in the fall after a dry spell. Spring is the best time for the waterfalls.
