Cataloochee Horse Camp

Waynesville, North Carolina

Admin: Shannon Schraufnagel

One of the neatest places to ride in North Carolina! It's on the Eastern side of the Smoky Mountains in Cataloochee Valley. It's a hairy road getting up to it but well worth the narrow road that climbs up the side of a mountain. If you're not a confident driver it might not be for you. You can fit large trailers up there (if you have experience) but you'll want to get someone to hold traffic at the other end. But the campground is tucked back in the trees with a rushing river right in the middle. You are surrounded by amazing beauty and history. Lots of old homesteads, churches, schools and cemeteries scattered through the area. And there are Elk right in camp! It's truly an experience in itself. And the views are amazing - in the valleys and on the mountain tops!

This is a view from the fire tower on Mt Sterling. It's a hard ride to the top of Mt Sterling but the view is worth it when you get there! It would be a awfully hard choice to pick between riding to the Swag or Mt Sterling! Cataloochee is a beautiful place!
