Ramblings of an Editor

They say "Time flies when you’re having fun" and I would agree with that – because looking back on five years of putting monthly magazines together every single month – it has flown by and it’s been fun! I have to admit there is always some anxiety that comes each month as we start with nothing and slowly gather content and photos. But I’m always amazed at the final day for the magazine to go Live at just how great each Issue is!

And our Anniversary Issue is always a favorite.

We showcase some of our most favorite articles from the past 12 months along with our favorite cover photo contestants!

I do believe you will love reading these articles even if it’s for the second time. I myself love the many different stories our HTCAA Facebook Members and Community Members bring in.

And the photos! So many amazing photos.

Each month I look forward to getting to know our members a bit more and getting to learn more about the many different trails they share along with their experiences. I also love to hear how their horses change their lives...

Sure, we all could still go camping and hit the trails without a horse – we could use our own two legs, or find a bicycle, or take a jeep. Maybe take up boating.

But, there is just something about a horse. That’s what I love about fellow trail riders… No matter our riding style, no matter our preference in campgrounds or trails... We are all tied together through our love of the horse.

That’s what I love about The Trail Journal...

It’s not just "reviews" on what campgrounds to stay at or what trails to ride – it’s about the experiences we have on horseback. I do believe we are of a dying breed in this world. There’s something different about horse people (in more ways than one!)… there’s something deep in our soul that longs to have a connection with a thousand-pound animal who could kill us with one wrong move – but yet can bond with us deeper than any other connection.

Now, I’m a dog lover and a cat lover and I love people. So, I could also write about how dogs and cats can also change lives, and how I couldn’t live without them.

But there’s something about a horse...

There’s something about getting that animal to trust you like no other, that grabs at our soul.

That’s what The Trail Journal is all about - sharing experiences from the trail with our horse. Urging our fellow trail riders to get out and explore the trails, stretch our wings, drive a little further or camp a little longer, and share our love of trail and horse with others.

I hope as you read this Anniversary Issue you feel that. And I hope it urges you to do just that – get out there with your horse and ride those trails.

And I do hope you will enjoy this FREE Issue so much that you would consider becoming an HTCAA Community Member for $35 a year – and get to enjoy wonderful Issues every single month! And with that $35 it will help the community of HTCAA grow and also make The Trail Journal even better in the future! Over the next 12 months, we’ll be unveiling a brand-new website that will be so much greater – and make HTCAA even better! We’ll have more member benefits to offer and it will connect the trail riding community all across America even more!

We do hope you’ll join us in this effort – and we hope you’ll enjoy this wonderful Anniversary Issue too! As we say here – Read it, Love it, Share it - And thank you for being a part of HTCAA!

Blessed Trails,

Shannon Schraufnagel is the Founder & President of HTCAA | Horse Trails & Camping Across America and the Editor-in-Chief of The Trail Journal. She grew up in Wisconsin, riding and showing American Quarter Horses in 4-H and open shows, as well as breed shows. When she started trail riding and camping with her best friend Jason, she fell in love with it - and her friend. They married in 2004 and in 2012 she created a Facebook group for trail riders just "for fun", which has now become the #1 Trail Riding Resource in the Country & Largest Trail Riding Community in America! She loves her HTCAA Members, her husband, and all her critters. She enjoys hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and of course trail riding in God's creation. Shannon will tell you she is greatly and wonderfully blessed - and doesn't deserve an ounce of it. She and her husband live in Wyoming.
