With Mara Vergon

Mara Vergon and her horse Mokey went on a trip of a lifetime the summer of 2019 to Custer, South Dakota with her friend Samie Ledyard and Cricket, and Mara’s mom Vicki O’Neil and Max. This is her story…

"We stayed at Broken Arrow Horse Camp and had the most fantastic experience. Their stalls are sturdy and clean, and easily accessed from your campsite. Campsites are easy to get into, even with a big rig (Ours is a 4 horse Bison with 10’ short wall living quarters). They have golf carts available, free of charge, to use for hauling tack and equipment to and from the stalls."

"Then there are the trails! Our favorite by far was Carol’s Ridge, although not for the faint of heart, as it truly is a ridge trail, the views are spectacular. Another favorite was the Green Gate and Quarry Trail. It looks as though you are on the edge of the world when you reach the green gate, and the quarry offers some unique views. We also rode a trail to ‘Heaven’ and a trail to Beecher Rock."

"There are plenty of trails right out of camp, but one of our bucket list items was to ride to Mount Rushmore. We trailered into the state park, to a small parking area (go early if you have a big rig, there is room but it can get tight if there are multiple rigs there). The ride was challenging, with many changes in elevation and rocky steps to climb, but completely worth the payoff!"

"There are several other trails you can haul to that we did not have time for this trip (maybe a future trip?) including Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak) and Devils Canyon. Broken Arrow offers trailers to rent for the day if you don’t want to pack up your camp as well. This was a trip to remember, and one I highly recommend to any avid trail rider!"
